Samir (Aasif Mandvi), a young Manhattan chef, is passed over for the head job at a fancy restaurant and has to go home to Queens when his father falls ill. The family's struggling Indian restaurant needs someone behind the stove, and that is where Akbar (Naseeruddin Shah), a taxi driver with a gift for cooking, begins teaching him. David Kaplan keeps the story close to the kitchen, and Samir learns the spices one pot at a time.
