Elisabeth (Lisa Lindgren) leaves her drunken, abusive husband Rolf (Michael Nyqvist) in 1975 and takes her two kids to her brother Göran's place in Stockholm. Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten) lives in a leftist commune called Together, where the house meetings run long and everyone has an opinion about the washing up. Moodysson's second feature sits Elisabeth at the big shared table, a stranger holding her plate among the long-haired, arguing housemates.
