Tokyo Story

“As long as life goes on, relationships between parents and children will bring boundless joy and endless grief.”

Shukichi Hirayama (Chishū Ryū) and his wife Tomi (Chieko Higashiyama) leave their small seaside village for the long trip to Tokyo, where their grown children now live. Koichi (So Yamamura), a doctor, and Shige (Haruko Sugimura), a hairdresser, are busy and have little time to give them. Yasujirō Ozu sets the visit against whatever is left for the old couple, and for Noriko (Setsuko Hara), the widow of their dead younger son, who stays to keep them company.
