“Tom Jones!... loves and loves and loves and loves...”

Tom Jones (Albert Finney) is a foundling raised in an English country estate, with an easy laugh and an appetite for most of what the countryside offers. He loves Sophie Western (Susannah York), the daughter of the neighboring squire, and she loves him back, though her family means for her to marry someone of better standing. Richardson films 1749 England with Finney's grin turned toward the camera, and the whole thing moves at a gallop.
