The film is set in rural Mississippi, where Jackson Fentry (Robert Duvall) works a farm alone and keeps to himself. When a pregnant woman, Sarah Eubanks (Olga Bellin), comes to him with nowhere else to go, he takes her in and looks after her. Joseph Anthony adapts Faulkner through Horton Foote's script, and the story rests on how far a lonely man will go to care for someone who is not his own.
