“The Vibrant, Pulsing Story of a Woman Escaping Her Past!”

In 1918, Elizabeth Hamilton (Claudette Colbert) is told her husband John Andrew (Orson Welles) has been killed in the war, and she goes on to raise their son and marry her kindly boss. Irving Pichel follows her to the eve of the next war, when her son wants to enlist and a stranger named Kessler arrives from abroad. It is a story about how long a person can carry a loss that was never finished.
