Too Much Johnson

Augustus Billings (Joseph Cotten), a New York playboy, bolts across rooftops and down fire escapes to escape the violent husband of his mistress, then takes on the name of a Cuban plantation owner. Orson Welles shot this silent chase in 1938 as the film portion of his Mercury Theatre stage show, but the venue had no projector. A workprint turned up in 2008 and first played in 2013, and it shows a young director learning, on the run, what a camera can do.
