In 1982 New York, Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a gifted actor nobody will hire, because he argues with every director who gives him a note. Out of options, he turns up at an audition for a daytime drama as Dorothy Michaels, and she gets the part. Sydney Pollack follows what happens when Dorothy becomes a hit and Michael falls for her co-star Julie (Jessica Lange), with the lie getting harder to keep.
