In 1933, Auguste Topaze (John Barrymore) teaches at a small private school, an honest, naive man whose good name is the one thing he owns. Harry d'Abbadie d'Arrast follows him into the world of Baron de La Tour-La Tour (Reginald Mason), who borrows that name to dress up a crooked business scheme. Coco (Myrna Loy), the Baron's mistress, is close to it all, and she sits near Topaze while he knows nothing about what is being done in his name.
