Arthur Simon Simpson (Peter Ustinov) is a small-time crook in Greece who wants an easy mark and a little money to coast on. His latest target turns out to be a gentleman thief planning to take the emerald-encrusted dagger of Mehmed II from Istanbul's Topkapi Museum. Jules Dassin gives the job to Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) and her crew, and Arthur gets pulled in as the one man who didn't ask to be.
