London in 1884 is in the grip of a heat wave that keeps audiences out of the theaters, and Princess Ida, the latest from W. S. Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) and Sir Arthur Sullivan (Allan Corduner), gets only lukewarm notices. Mike Leigh follows the two men and the company around them through the fifteen months before The Mikado opens. Gilbert, stubborn and exacting, has to find a way to keep working beside a composer who wants to write more serious music.
