Torment

Jan-Erik Widgren (Alf Kjellin) is a schoolboy in his last year, with a Latin teacher nicknamed Caligula (Stig Järrel) who has made himself the terror of his classroom. Then Jan-Erik meets Bertha Olsson (Mai Zetterling), a lonely, drinking woman already tied to the man he fears, and takes up with her anyway. Alf Sjöberg, working from a script by Ingmar Bergman, sets a boy's hope of leaving school against a teacher who will not let either of them go.
