“It tears you apart with suspense!”

Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman), an American scientist, wants a formula that exists only in East Germany, so he pretends to defect there at the height of the Cold War. Alfred Hitchcock follows him across the border, where his fiancée Sarah Sherman (Julie Andrews) turns up, unaware that the betrayal she sees is a cover. Everything she knows about the man she loves has just stopped being true.
