Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window

“You really are a good kid.”

In Tokyo during the Second World War, a young girl called Totto-chan (Liliana Ohno) arrives at Tomoe Gakuen, a school whose classrooms are old railroad cars. Shinnosuke Yakuwa adapts Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's childhood memoir, with Sōsaku Kobayashi (Koji Yakusho) as the headmaster who prizes freedom and independence in his pupils. Outside the school gates, Japan is sliding deeper into war, and what Totto-chan is learning there is what she will carry into it.
