Harry Doyle (Burt Lancaster) and Archie Long (Kirk Douglas) walk out of prison after thirty years, the sentence for a train robbery they pulled in 1956. At the bank to collect their release checks, they stop a holdup, so the old skills are still there. Jeff Kanew sets the two men against a world that has moved on, and the last thing we see is Harry and Archie standing together in the open air outside the gate.
