“How can you find yourself if no one can see you?”

Thirteen-year-old Jasira Maroun (Summer Bishil) wants out from under her strict father, Rifat (Peter Macdissi), and a body she doesn't yet understand. Alan Ball sets her down in a Houston suburb during the Gulf War, next door to Mr. Vuoso (Aaron Eckhart), an Army reservist who speaks to her with open contempt. Jasira is a child in a house full of adults with their own agendas, and the people in charge of her are the ones she has to watch.
