In the 15th century, Richard, Duke of Gloucester (Basil Rathbone), sets out to remove everyone standing between him and the crown worn by his brother, King Edward IV (Ian Hunter). His club-footed executioner Mord (Boris Karloff) does the killing, and after each death Richard takes one figurine out of a dollhouse throne room. Rowland V. Lee builds the film around the two men, the courtier who plans and the servant who carries it out.
