A panther is killing the cattle on a ranch in the mountains near Aspen, an enormous animal the family talks about as if it were more than a beast. The first big snowstorm of winter closes in on the valley and keeps the Bridges family under one roof, among them Curt (Robert Mitchum), Harold (Tab Hunter) and their mother, Ma (Beulah Bondi). William A. Wellman uses the confinement to show how Curt and his brother Harold have always circled each other.
