Orphaned, Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) is taken in by Don Lope (Fernando Rey), a respected man in Toledo who has no right to the hold he takes over her. She is a girl with nowhere else to go, and he is her guardian, and the house they share is his. Luis Buñuel follows her as she falls for the painter Horacio (Franco Nero) and starts, slowly, to fight for a life of her own.
