“Win and he lives to fight again. Lose and his family dies with him.”

In 1943, Salamo Arouch (Willem Dafoe), a Jewish Greek boxer, is arrested with his family and sent to Auschwitz. The guards soon discover what he can do in a ring, and he is made to fight other prisoners for their amusement, with Gypsy (Edward James Olmos) among those he meets in the camp. Robert M. Young shot the film at Auschwitz itself, and the bouts are staged in close, cramped frames.
