In 1986, the Texas town of Virgil is getting ready to celebrate its 150th birthday with a parade and a talent show. A narrator in a cowboy hat (David Byrne) drives through, introducing the locals, among them Louis Fyne (John Goodman), a big, lonely man looking for someone to marry, and a woman (Jo Harvey Allen) who cannot stop telling lies. Byrne, making his debut as a director, films these people straight on and lets them stay as odd as they are.
