“A slightly twisted comedy.”

Maria Coughlin (Adrienne Shelly), a pregnant high school dropout on Long Island, gets thrown out of her house. She lands in the orbit of Matthew Slaughter (Martin Donovan), a brilliant, short-tempered electronics repairman who has no patience for most people. Hal Hartley films their meeting in flat, clipped exchanges, and Maria sets out to find out whether she can lean on a man who barely trusts anyone.
