Winnie Foster (Alexis Bledel) slips away from her overprotective parents in a small rural town in 1914, hungry for any life bigger than the one planned for her. Jay Russell follows her into the woods and into the company of the Tucks, led by Angus (William Hurt) and Mae (Sissy Spacek). The film stays close to Winnie, a girl in a long dress at the edge of the trees, looking at a world she has only been allowed to watch.
