“Some people can buy their way out of anything. Except the past.”

Harry Ross (Paul Newman) is a retired private detective who wants nothing more than to be left alone. He takes what looks like a simple errand for his friends Jack (Gene Hackman) and Catherine Ames (Susan Sarandon), and it opens wounds that were supposed to stay closed. Robert Benton directs it as a slow, rain-soaked noir, letting the case unwind at the pace of an old man's footsteps.
