Nigel Whitmey (the uncredited Peter Glahn) is a man caught in a land where the sun never sets and love turns dark. Guy Maddin shot his second colour feature on 35 mm, working from a George Toles script drawn from Knut Hamsun's novel Pan and a Prosper Mérimée story. Shelley Duvall and Alice Krige move through that glare, the light never letting up on a single face.
