“We have invaded Silo 3. We are prepared to launch nine nuclear missiles. We demand ten million dollars, Air Force One... and you, Mr President.”
In the 1970s, General Lawrence Dell (Burt Lancaster) breaks out of a military prison and walks into an ICBM silo near Montana. He holds the missiles hostage until President David T. Stevens (Charles Durning) discloses what was said at a secret meeting held just after the start of the Vietnam War. Robert Aldrich puts the President and Dell at opposite ends of a phone line, each one forced to decide how far the other can be trusted.
