Two in the Shadow

Shiro Mishima (Yūzō Kayama) is driving when a man steps into the road and dies, and although no one blames him, his company sends him off to a small branch in a remote town. Before he goes, he hands the dead man's widow, Yumiko (Yōko Tsukasa), a large sum of money, which she uses to return to her hometown. This was Mikio Naruse's last film, and what hangs over it is whether either of them can ever be clear of that one night on the road.
