Mexico in the 1860s, under the puppet reign of Emperor Maximilian, and the dry plains are crawling with French soldiers and rebel fighters. Hogan (Clint Eastwood), a mercenary drifting through, pulls a nun named Sara (Shirley MacLaine) away from a band of rogues, and Don Siegel sends the two of them off toward a French garrison and a train. Under the bickering is plain mismatch, a hired gun and a holy woman who have each decided what the other is.
