For years, settlers taken by the Comanche have simply not come home, and families on the frontier have stopped expecting them. Marshal Guthrie McCabe (James Stewart) and First Lt. Jim Gary (Richard Widmark) ride out to find them, with Marty Purcell (Shirley Jones) among those waiting. John Ford makes the trip a long, sun-bleached one, and what the two men are risking is whether the people they bring back will be welcomed at all.
