A (Harvey Keitel), a filmmaker who has lived abroad for years, travels back to his home country with one goal: to find three lost reels of film, the first ever shot in the Balkans. He moves across the region by taxi, by train and by boat, and Theo Angelopoulos fills the trip with memories of his early life. Along the way the keeper of the film archive, Ivo Levy (Erland Josephson), becomes the one person who understands what he is looking for.
