Ulzana's Raid

(1972)Directed by Robert Aldrich103 min · RWestern
“One man alone understood the savagery of the early American west from both sides.”

Lt. Garnett DeBuin (Bruce Davison) is fresh from the Army and new to Arizona when a Chiricahua war chief, Ulzana (Joaquín Martínez), walks off the reservation with a small war party. DeBuin must lead the cavalry after them, guided by the weary scout McIntosh (Burt Lancaster). Robert Aldrich sets idealism against the brutal facts of the 1880s frontier, and the film makes plain that the lieutenant's beliefs may not survive the country.
