In the Ohio valley, the colonists of 1763 Virginia keep hearing war drums that no one can explain or ignore. Abigail Hale (Paulette Goddard), convicted in England, accepts fourteen years of bondage in the colony to escape the gallows, and Captain Christopher Holden (Gary Cooper) soon stands between her and the frontier closing in around Fort Pitt. Cecil B. DeMille fills the screen with lavish costumes, colorful sets and thousands of extras.
