Under the Hawthorn Tree

Jing (Zhou Dongyu) is a schoolgirl whose father is labeled a right-winger, and what she wants most is a clean record and a place to belong. She is sent to the countryside for reeducation and put to work on a textbook, where she meets Sun (Shawn Dou Xiao), a young soldier with a bright future. Zhang Yimou frames the two of them under a hawthorn tree, the branches bare and the ground beneath them pale.
