Under the Sun of Satan

In the countryside of northern France in the 1920s, a young priest, Donissan (Gérard Depardieu), has real spiritual gifts and no peace about them. Maurice Pialat sets him against Mouchette (Sandrine Bonnaire), a girl who has killed one of her lovers, and against the devil himself, who tempts him as he tries to save her soul. Under it all is a plain, ugly question of whether a good man's effort counts for anything in a world that evil holds.
