“'Nobody helps me -- I help them!'”
In the gangster-run nightlife of a 1920s American city, Bull Weed (George Bancroft) is a loud, swaggering kingpin who takes in a drunk former lawyer and nicknames him Rolls Royce (Clive Brook). Josef von Sternberg, working from a story by Ben Hecht, made this silent picture early in the history of crime movies. Rolls Royce dries out under Bull's patronage, and Feathers (Evelyn Brent), Bull's girlfriend, begins to look at him differently.
