Jeff Butler (Joel McCrea) is the Union Pacific's chief troubleshooter, sent to keep the rails moving west after Lincoln signs the bill that authorizes them. Cecil B. DeMille puts him between Sid Campeau, a gambler hired by a financier who stands to profit if the line stalls, and his war buddy Dick Allen (Robert Preston), a rival for Mollie Monahan (Barbara Stanwyck). Jeff has the track to lay, a saboteur to stop, and a woman to win, with no time for any of them.
