In the early 1990s, Michael (Kurt Russell) and Karen Carr (Madeleine Stowe) have their home broken into, and the officer who answers the call is Pete Davis (Ray Liotta). Pete is helpful and quick to befriend them, and his attention keeps drifting toward Karen. Jonathan Kaplan lets the friendship sour by degrees, with the police on one side and a husband and wife with nowhere else to go.
