New Zealand, the war years, and four sisters watch American troops pass through on their way to the Pacific. Barbara (Jean Simmons) and her sisters, among them Anne (Joan Fontaine), fall for the Marines, and Capt. Jack Harding (Paul Newman) is one of the men they meet. Robert Wise shoots it in black-and-white CinemaScope, the wide frame holding the sisters and their small town.
