A lottery ticket worth a fortune is gone, lost the night armed men robbed an after-hours nightclub, and nobody will say who has it. Steve Jackson (Sidney Poitier) and his friend Wardell Franklin (Bill Cosby) go looking for it through the city's underworld, past gangsters like Geechie Dan Beauford (Harry Belafonte). Poitier, who also directed, makes the hunt about two ordinary working men who want a better life and have only a slip of paper to hope on.
