In a bombed-out French village just after the war, the Communist Party goes looking for a Pétain loyalist and starts leaning on whoever stands in its way. Léopold (Gérard Depardieu), the bar owner who writes poetry and wants only to run his café in peace, becomes a target and pushes back. Claude Berri sets the quarrel among neighbors who share a street, a counter and a war none of them can finish settling.
