Why would a widow dare her former lover to ruin the most honorable woman in the county? Merteuil (Annette Bening) makes the wager in 18th-century France, and Valmont (Colin Firth) accepts, setting out to seduce the newly married Madame de Tourvel (Meg Tilly). Miloš Forman sends him into the chase sure of his own appetites, and he does not see that he is the one being drawn in.
