Benjamin Trane (Gary Cooper), a Southern gentleman left with nothing after the Civil War, rides into Mexico looking for work, and he finds Joe Erin (Burt Lancaster), a grinning gunman with a gang of hired killers. Maximilian's Marquis hires them to escort the Countess Marie Duvarre (Denise Darcel) to Vera Cruz. Trane and Erin ride side by side, each watching the other's hands, neither willing to say whether he trusts him.
