“History's most unlikely friendship.”

Why does the aging Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) keep a young Indian clerk, Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), so near her that her own household turns against him? He arrives to hand over a ceremonial coin and ends up at her side, the two of them striking up an unlikely friendship. Stephen Frears, working from Lee Hall's script, fills the palace with gold, long dinners and heavy drapery.
