“By the time he's ready to kill you, its an act of mercy.”

Vic Dakin (Richard Burton) runs the London underworld in the 1970s and wants to keep climbing, so he starts blackmailing Members of Parliament. Michael Tuchner puts him opposite Bob Matthews (Nigel Davenport), a Scotland Yard man who has been waiting for exactly this mistake. It is a story about how ambition in the criminal world works, since reaching for one more thing is what finally gives the police their opening.
