Why does a man whose paintings no one will buy keep getting money in the mail? Vincent Van Gogh (Tim Roth) paints and fails, while his younger brother Theo (Paul Rhys), an art dealer in Paris, pays for the canvases and the rent. Robert Altman builds the film on their letters, and the money tying the brothers together also draws them closer and strains them.
