Fifteen years of photographing the world have left Gussie Sawyer (Sissy Spacek) with a famous name, and nothing yet explains why she comes home to the Maryland coastal resort where she grew up. There she finds Henry Squires (Kevin Kline), her high school sweetheart, now married to Ruth (Bonnie Bedelia) and running the newspaper his father left him. Jack Fisk's film is about what two people carry from the town they started in, and how long they keep carrying it.
