“We've got nothing to hide...”

Why does Don Jaime, an aging landowner who has met his niece only once, insist that she leave her convent preparations behind and come stay with him? Viridiana (Silvia Pinal) goes unwillingly, a novice days from taking her vows, and finds that her uncle sees his dead wife in her face. Luis Buñuel sets the stakes quietly: her faith, her vows and her place in the convent all depend on what Jaime decides he wants from her.
