Raimunda (Penélope Cruz), a working-class woman south of Madrid, goes to extreme lengths to protect her 14-year-old daughter Paula (Yohana Cobo). Then her mother Irene (Carmen Maura) turns up again, though she is dead, with loose ends to tie. Pedro Almodóvar sets this among women who have survived fire, lies and the east wind, and Raimunda keeps on cooking, cleaning and hauling for them all.
