“Destiny is the most powerful coincidence of all.”

In April 1957, the plane carrying engineer Walter Faber (Sam Shepard) goes down in Mexico, and the news he hears afterward is that he fathered a child in 1938. He boards a ship from New York to France and falls for Sabeth (Julie Delpy), a young woman half his age. Volker Schlöndorff follows a man who trusts only probability, and who starts counting the coincidences against his own certainty.
