“Their affair ignited a scandal. Their passion brought down an empire.”

In 1998, an auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's estate draws crowds, and Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) goes back to it again and again. Madonna cuts between Wally's life and the romance of Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D'Arcy), which Wally has become fixed on. The more she learns about what Wallis and Edward gave up for each other, the more she measures her own marriage against theirs.
